Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project, Zambia

Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project

Project Summary:

  • The Lower Zambezi REDD+ project protects more than 38,000 hectares (94,000+ acres) of Miombo forest in Zambia that borders the Lower Zambezi National Park.
  • Degradation from unsustainable charcoal production followed by deforestation and conversion to agriculture threaten these forests.
  • The project aims to reduce degradation and deforestation by working with communities to implement sustainable charcoal production practices, improve agricultural practices, and provide incentives for conservation.
  • Co-Benefits

    • The project protects habitat and corridors for lions, elephants, and locally threatened sable (and enforces a strict no hunting policy).
    • Local communities will improve productivity and incomes from farming, honey production, sustainable charcoal production, and eco-tourism.
    • These communities also receive training on water wells and improved access to clean water, as well as support for schools.
    • Project Standards: Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community, and Biodiversity (CCB) Standard (triple-gold)
