Project Summary:

  • The Chocó-Darién Conservation Corridor REDD+ project protects more than 13,000 hectares (33,000+ acres) of tropical rain forest in northwest Colombia.
  • This area is threatened with deforestation and degradation from cattle ranches, agriculture, and unsustainable logging.
  • The project aims to reduce deforestation and degradation by working with communities to improve governance, increase forest patrols, implement sustainable livelihood alternatives, and provide incentives for conservation.

    • The project protects a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot that is home to threatened and endangered species like the jaguar, spider monkey, and golden poison dart frog.
    • The project will increase employment and the local governance capacities of local Afro-Colombian communities.
    • More than 50% of carbon offset proceeds are received by these local communities.
    • Project Standards: Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community, and Biodiversity (CCB) Standard (triple-gold)
